CITY OF SANTA CLARITA FILM OFFICE SEES INCREASES IN FILM DAYS AND ECONOMIC IMPACT IN JANUARY 2009 – FEBRUARY 3, 2009

City Life NewsSANTA CLARITA -The City of Santa Clarita Film Office announced today that the month of January 2009 was the most successful to date, with the office overseeing more film days and reporting a higher economic impact for the month than any other January on record since the office’s inception in 2002.
The City of Santa Clarita reported a total of 84 film days in the month, a 265 percent increase when compared to January 2008 when the City hosted 23 film days. Location filming for the month resulted in more than $2.3 million in economic benefit to Santa Clarita businesses, compared to January 2008 when $367,500 in economic impact was reported. The City of Santa Clarita Film Office issued 25 permits in January 2009, compared to 24 permits in January 2008.
The Film Office attributes the dramatic increase in film days to the steady base of local television production in Santa Clarita, which currently includes HBO’s “Big Love,” CBS’s “NCIS” and “The Unit,” and Discovery Channel’s “Doing Da Vinci.” And while the City of Santa Clarita is proud to start 2009 on a strong note, officials remain realistic about the coming months and what they will bring with the still-looming SAG strike and weakening economy.
“We are thrilled to start 2009 on such a strong note,” said Mayor Frank Ferry. “Los Angeles’ film community, which includes Santa Clarita, is really taking a hit with feature films leaving for other states and countries offering production incentives. However, Santa Clarita’s ability to capture television production has really offset the losses and declines most cities are feeling in Southern California.”
In addition to shows based in the City, several other television shows, like “24,” “Heroes,” “House,” “Wipeout,” and “My Name is Earl,” regularly film on location in Santa Clarita. And in the month of January, the City also hosted several small budget feature film days and commercials.
Location filming is an important part of the Santa Clarita Valley economy, contributing an estimated $13.5 million in economic impact locally in the first seven months of Fiscal Year 2008-2009, which runs from July through June.
The City continues to market our valley as an ideal place to film and credits its success as a prime film destination to Santa Clarita’s film-friendly neighborhoods and businesses, variety of locations, affordable permit and location fees, close proximity to Los Angeles, and access to talented industry professionals.
Santa Clarita businesses continue to make the area an ideal place to work in the industry’s “30-Mile Zone,” an industry designation that allows productions to save money on per diem and mileage, by keeping location and rental fees competitive. The residential communities are also a big part of the Santa Clarita Valley’s success, with individual homeowners and neighborhoods working hand-in-hand with productions to make filming happen, even when it includes the occasional late hours and complicated scenes.
The City of Santa Clarita’s Film Office was created to help attract and retain the filming industry including both location filming and film-related businesses. The office currently issues permits for all location filming within the City ensuring that there is a
minimal impact on residents and businesses, promotes the City as an ideal place for the film industry to do businesses, and promotes the Santa Clarita Valley as a great place for location filming.
The film industry is a major economic engine of the City’s economy, providing increased revenue for local programs through sales tax revenue, and jobs for residents. For more information about the Film Office, please contact City of Santa Clarita Economic Development Associate Jessica Freude at (661) 286-4103 or visit santa-clarita.com.

SCV YOUTH PROJECT BOWLING OVER IN SUPPORT OF YOUTH

SCV YOUTH PROJECT BOWLING OVER IN SUPPORT OF YOUTH -MARCH 10, 2009

Santa Clarita, Calif. – Santa Clarita City Council Members Bob Kellar and Laurie Ender, will join the SCV Youth Project in hosting the 4 th Annual Bowling For Youts’ Charity Event on April 19, at Valencia Lanes in Newhall starting at 1 p.m.

“There is so much need for our free on-campus services for youth given the current economy,” said John Musella, president of the board of directors for the SCV Youth Project. “Our annual family fun bowling event brings our community together to support youth in our valley. I can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend afternoon then having fun bowling with family and friends, all while helping local youth!”

The SCV Youth Project provides free on-campus support services. The Youth Project’s peer mentors work with students at local high school and junior high campuses, providing case management and facilitating support groups to help teens deal with serious life issues such as teen pregnancy, grief/loss, alcohol and drug abuse, male/female issues, conflict resolution, anger management, goal setting, relationships, life skills, job skills, etc.

“The need for an agency such as the Youth Project is beyond measure,” said Kim Goldman, SCV Youth Project executive director when asked why it is so important to have a program such as this one. “We all know how hard it is to be a teenager these days. We provide a safe place for kids to share their feelings and learn life skills to help them make better, smarter decisions as they become adults. We owe it to our youth to be readily available as possible.”

Council Members Kellar and Ender will emcee the fun-filled day, and join community leaders from Poole & Shaffery, California United Bank, Rituals Colour Salon, The Wildcat Group, Farmers Insurance, Infinity Wealth Management, Newhall Land, Fashion Frolic, Whitestar USA, Tom Hough CPA and many other corporate sponsors and local families.

The SCV Youth Project was founded in 2000 and has reached more than 20,000 kids through peer mentoring, support groups, crisis intervention and outreach.

GOV. SCHWARZENEGGER ANNOUNCES FIRST-IN-THE-NATION CABINET POSITION

GOV. SCHWARZENEGGER ANNOUNCES FIRST-IN-THE-NATION CABINET POSITION FOR SERVICE AND VOLUNTEERING – MARCH 1, 2008

By Margie Anne ClarkNORTHRIDGE, Calif. – In an unprecedented move to encourage volunteerism in the Golden State, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the first-in-the-nation executive order to establish the new position of Secretary of Service and Volunteering. Schwarzenegger’s action is envisioned to improve coordination of volunteer efforts between California’s state departments and agencies.

The order was signed by Schwarzenegger on Tuesday during a press conference held at California State University Northridge’s Plaza Del Sol. Newly appointed Secretary of Service and Volunteering, Karen Baker will be a member of the Governor’s Cabinet. Baker, 46, of Sacramento, has served as executive director of California Volunteers, formerly known as California Service Corps and the Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism, since 2005.

“Karen Baker does a fantastic job managing California Volunteers,” Schwarzenegger said. “By elevating the state’s volunteer profile we will make it easier for people to figure out where to go and what to do when they want to give their time or their resources.”

Schwarzenegger said that while government can give direction and impetus, real change has to come from people working together in their communities.

“I want to move civic engagement to the highest levels of state government, which is where it belongs,” said Schwarzenegger. “Californians’ desire and will to serve are there in abundance. We must do everything we can to harness this incredible resource.”

First Lady Maria Shriver – whose father Robert Sargent Shriver Jr.’s career and the Kennedy family legacy were founded upon service to country – stressed the importance her husband’s action which is expected to raise the profile of service in the state of California to a national level.

“I’m a big believer in uniting people to create change and achieve a positive legacy in their own lives, in their communities, in their state and beyond and it is through the act of service that this goal can be attained. Today as we elevate service, we elevate our fellow Californians to be 38 million strong,” said Shriver, who serves as California Volunteers’ honorary chair.

In statements to Gov. Schwarzenegger and First Lady Shriver, presidential candidates, Sen. John McCain, Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama lauded Schwarzenegger’s call to action.

“Service to one’s country and community is the most noble of things an American can give. For a state the size and influence of California to elevate service and volunteering to such a prominent position in government says a lot about the state’s people and about the priorities of Governor Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver,” McCain said.

Sen. Clinton said the new position will help to ensure that California’s volunteers are fully integrated at the highest levels into the state’s efforts to build a better California.
“I commend California for taking civic engagement and volunteerism to a new level by announcing a cabinet level secretary of service and volunteerism,” Clinton said.

Sen. Obama praised Schwarzenegger’s action as a defining moment in the nation’s history.

“The Governor’s decision to elevate civic engagement to such an important level reminds us that the call to serve is one that transcends partisanship and has the power to unite this generation around a common purpose,” Obama said. “America is a great nation precisely because Americans have been willing to stand up when it was hard, to serve on stages both great and small, and to rise above moments of great challenge and terrible trial,” Obama added.
