Academy Museum Dedicates Grand Lobby To Film Legend Sir Sidney L. Poitier.

Los Angeles, August 30, 2021 – Bill Kramer, Director and President of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, today announced that the new museum, opening in Los Angeles on September 30, is naming its 10,000-square-foot lobby in honor of the legendary actor, film director, producer, and humanitarian Sir Sidney L. Poitier. The naming of the Sidney Poitier Grand Lobby was made possible through a campaign supported by Ambassador Nicole Avant and Co-CEO of Netflix and Chair of the Academy Museum Board of Trustees Ted Sarandos, the Perenchio Foundation, Tyler Perry, and Oprah Winfrey, with major gifts from Patrick and Michele Soon-Shiong, among additional donors.

“It is an incredible honor to name our grand lobby—the nucleus of the Academy Museum—in celebration of Sir Sidney Poitier, whose legacy of humanitarian efforts and groundbreaking artistry continues to inspire us all,” said Bill Kramer. “We are deeply thankful to everyone who supported this campaign, and to Sidney, his wife Joanna Shimkus Poitier, and their entire family for allowing us this great privilege.”

Joanna Shimkus Poitier said, “Sidney’s tremendous impact on the motion picture industry, and on audiences around the world, is inseparable from the story of his longstanding, collegial relationship with the Academy. Sidney has always taken great pride in the Academy’s recognition of his work. To be honored now as the namesake of the Academy Museum’s lobby, the place of access to everything that lies within, is almost like receiving a second Oscar® for lifetime achievement.”

Sir Sidney Poitier made his screen debut in the 1950 film No Way Out, an American film noir which was among the first Hollywood movies to directly address the subject of racism. Poitier went on to become a celebrated actor known for his roles in The Defiant Ones (1958, which earned him his first Oscar nomination), Porgy and Bess (1959), A Raisin in the Sun (1961), A Patch of Blue (1965), In the Heat of the Night (1967), To Sir, with Love (1967) and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967). He has also directed nine feature films.

Among the many honors and awards for his work, Poitier won an Academy Award® for Best Actor for Lilies of the Field (1963), becoming the first Black winner of a Best Actor Oscar. In 2001 he received an Academy Honorary Award, presented by Denzel Washington, “in recognition of his remarkable accomplishments as an artist and as a human being.” In 1974, Queen Elizabeth II named Poitier an honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 1995 he received a Kennedy Center Honor and in 2009 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. Poitier’s Best Actor Oscar as well as his acceptance speech are featured in the Academy Museum’s core exhibition, Stories of Cinema.

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, the Poitier Lobby occupies the entire first floor of the restored and revitalized landmark Saban Building—formerly known as the May Company building (1939)—from Wilshire Boulevard at the South to the dramatic Walt Disney Company Piazza at the North. With its 24-foot ceilings and open, modern design, the Poitier Lobby serves as the heart for all museum activities. From this central hub, visitors can move to the galleries and theaters, stop for a drink or a meal at Fanny’s, or enjoy shopping at the Academy Museum Store. The Museum’s core exhibition Stories of Cinema, which stretches across three floors of the Saban Building, begins on the ground floor in the Poitier Lobby’s soaring Spielberg Family Gallery, which is always open to the public free of charge. Within the Spielberg Family Gallery visitors can stroll through a rapid immersion into the history of film, as seen through images playing on multiple hanging screens.

New Updates on Upcoming Disney Parks Attraction Based on “The Princess and The Frog” at former Splash Mountain site.

Anaheim, Calif. – Last year, Disney Parks announced that Imagineers are developing an all-new attraction coming to both Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort inspired by the fan favorite Walt Disney Animation Studios film, “The Princess and the Frog.” With the kick off of World Princess Week today, celebrating the characteristics these Disney heroes inspire in fans all around the world, there are some new details to share! Splash Mountain – at both Disneyland park in California and Magic Kingdom park in Florida – will soon be completely reimagined as “The Princess and the Frog.”

Tiana is an ambitious and resilient woman, who proves that success comes through a connection to her family and community and has learned to never lose sight of what’s really important – giving back to others through great food and inspiring them to achieve their full potential.

As seen in this latest rendering of the attraction, the story will take place after the final kiss as Naveen and Louis join Tiana on her latest adventure, hosting a one-of-a-kind Mardi Gras celebration where everyone is welcome – during which some original music inspired by songs from the film will bring guests into the story. Tiana is leading the way and fans will be able to encounter old friends and make new ones along the way as well.

We recently gathered Kenneth Moton, National Correspondent for ABC News as he joins Stella Chase Reese, Owner of Dooky Chase’s Restaurant and daughter of Leah Chase; Carmen Smith, Creative Executive, Vice President, Inclusive Strategies for Walt Disney Imagineering; Charita Carter, Senior Producer for Walt Disney Imagineering; and Marlon West, VFX Supervisor for Walt Disney Animation Studios at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant in New Orleans — founder Leah Chase was one of the inspirations for Princess Tiana — to talk about Tiana’s impact over the past decade and the creative process behind the upcoming attraction, including the next-level technology Imagineers are employing to bring it to life.

Imagineers often do in-depth research to help inspire their work. In this case, that involved digging deep into the culture of New Orleans to tell a story that’s as authentic to the region as it is to the characters’ stories. From the food, music, art and architecture to the diversity of its people and their traditions, there is much from which to draw inspiration. The team has done virtual research trips through Zoom and this was their first of many in-person research trips to come and get the story right.

Tying to Leah Chase’s love of art, one of the early sources of inspiration has come from Sharika Mahdi — a visual artist, art educator, and alumna of the renowned YAYA (Young Aspirations Young Artists) Arts Center located in New Orleans — who was commissioned to create a series of four original paintings to inspire Imagineers, one of which was revealed today.

To celebrate all of these developments, our love and appreciation for New Orleans, and our commitment to arts education, Disney announced a $50,000 donation to the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), a regional, pre-professional arts training center that offers students intensive instruction in culinary arts, dance, media arts, classical instrumental music, jazz instrumental music, classical vocal music, drama, musical theatre, theatre design, visual arts and creative writing.

Stay tuned for more updates as work progresses on this exciting new attraction, and discover how Tiana is represented across Disney Parks, Experiences and Products today here.

Marion Cotillard to receive a Donostia Award at San Sebastian Festival’s 69th edition.

The French actress will collect the honorary award on September 17 during the opening ceremony.

Donostia-San Sebastián Spain Marion Cotillard, one of contemporary cinema’s most international French actresses, will receive a Donostia Award at San Sebastian Festival’s 69th edition. She will collect the honorary award on Friday, September 17, during the Festival opening ceremony at the Kursaal Auditorium.

Cotillard, winner of the Oscar, the Golden Globe and the BAFTA for her role as Édith Piaf in La Môme La Vie en Rose (Olivier Dahan, 2007), has shone brightly in European and North American productions, putting equal talent into dramatic, comedy and action roles alongside filmmakers including Michael Mann, Christopher Nolan, Woody Allen, Steven Soderbergh, James Gray, the Dardenne brothers, Arnaud Desplechin, Nicole Garcia, Leos Carax and her partner, the director and actor Guillaume Canet.

Born in Paris into a family of artists, she made her acting debut while still a young child in one of the plays staged by her father, Jean-Claude Cotillard. After participating in TV series, she performed her first part for the cinema in L’histoire du garçon qui voulait qu’on l’embrasse (Philippe Harel, 1994). Her participation in Taxi (Gérard Pirès, 1998) garnered her the first of her six César Award nominations. She would later slip into the skin of Lilly Bertineau in Taxi 2 (2000) and Taxi 3 (2003) −both directed by Gérard Krawczyk– the sequels of the action box-office hit written and produced by Luc Besson.

Cotillard doubled up to play clashing twin sisters in Les jolies choses / Pretty Things (Gilles Paquet-Brenner, 2001), for which she landed yet another Best New Actress César nomination. Her fame in France grew thanks to the romantic comedy, Jeux d’enfants / Love Me if You Dare (Yann Samuell, 2003), after which she made her first Hollywood incursion with the North American Tim Burton, in the ensemble cast of Big Fish (2003). She finally won the César for Best Supporting Actress in the romantic drama set against the background of war Un long dimanche de fiançailles / A Very Long Engagement, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2004). That same year she featured in the cast of Innocence (Lucile Hadzihalilovic, 2004), winner of the New Directors Award in San Sebastian. After working in Mary (Abel Ferrara, Perlak, 2005), Sauf le respect que je vous dois / Burn Out (Fabienne Godet, New Directors, 2005) and Fair Play (Lionel Baillu, Kutxa New Directors Award, 2006), the actress embodied the restaurant owner and love interest of Russel Crowe’s character in A Good Year (2006), by Ridley Scott.

Her acclaimed recreation of the famous singer Édith Piaf represented a before and after in her career on becoming the first French actress to win the Oscar for a performance in the French language. Her role in La Môme / La Vie en Rose (Olivier Dahan, 2007) also earned Cotillard the Golden Globe, the BAFTA and her second César Award, this time as Leading Actress. She received the French Medal of the Order of Arts and Letters shortly afterwards.

From then on, Marion Cotillard ranked up her appearances in Hollywood productions including Public Enemies (Michael Mann, 2009), in which she played Billie Frechette, girlfriend of the gangster John Dillinger; the musical Nine (Rob Marshall, 2009), in which she once again displayed her skills as a singer and dancer; in the action movies Inception (2010) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012), both directed by Christopher Nolan; the comedies Midnight in Paris (Woody Allen, 2011), the thrillers Contagion (Steven Soderbergh, 2011), Blood Ties (Guillaume Canet, 2013), Allied (Robert Zemeckis, 2016); or the dramas The Immigrant (James Gray, 2013), her first leading role in a North American movie, and Macbeth (Justin Kurzel, 2015).

Meanwhile, the actress has continued to work with important European filmmakers including Jacques Audiard (De rouille et d’os / Rust and Bone, 2012) and the Dardenne brothers (Deux jours, une nuite / Two Days, One Night, 2014), landing her fifth and sixth César nominations respectively. She has also worked under the orders of Xavier Dolan (Juste la fin du monde / It’s Only the End of the World, 2016), Arnaud Desplechin (Les fantômes d’Ismaël / Ismael’s Ghosts, 2017) and Leos Carax, with whom she recently starred in Annette (2021), an unclassifiable musical which opened this year’s official competition at the Festival de Cannes.

She has worked alongside actors and actresses including Matthew Modine, Forest Whitaker, Christian Bale, Daniel Day-Lewis, Penélope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Clive Owen, Joaquin Phoenix, Jeremy Renner, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Louis Garrel, Léa Seydoux, Mathieu Amalric, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Vincent Cassel, Benoît Magimel, François Cluzet, Adam Driver and Johnny Depp, who will also receive the Donostia Award at San Sebastian Festival’s 69th edition.

A strong supporter of environmental protection, the actress is also the producer of Bigger Than Us, a documentary by Flore Vasseur (who’s also co-producing, along with Denis Carot from Elzévir Films) lending a voice to the youths committed to change. The film will show in San Sebastian as a Donostia Award Special Screening on September 18 at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre. It was previously programmed at the Festival de Cannes alongside other titles intended to raise awareness in the audience on climate change and its effect on the environment.

Tickets for the ceremony at which Cotillard will receive the award will go on sale on September 12. The Award will be presented during the Festival opening gala (September 17) and will include the screening of Rosa Rosae. La Guerra Civil / Rosa Rosae. A Spanish Civil War Elegy, a short film by Carlos Saura, together with Zhang Yimou’s Yi miao zhong / One Second feature film.

Isla Shares “12 Bars” From ‘The Mediterranean Gardener’ Out August 27, 2021.

The Mediterranean Gardener Out August 27 on Yep Roc Records

Los Angeles, Calif. – Isla has unveiled “12 Bars,” the fourth single from the forthcoming debut album, The Mediterranean Gardenerout August 27 on Yep Roc Records; listen here.

Released first as a Bandcamp exclusive, the digital-only The Mediterranean Gardener is acclaimed singer/songwriter Josh Rouse’s new solo project. With gorgeous chilled-out electronica, the nine-track album provides a refreshing musical tonic for these stressful times

Of “12 Bars” Rouse says, “It’s the only song I co-wrote on this record. Daniel Tashian is a friend and collaborator. He had been on a bar crawl the night before and he got something like nine in. We laughed at not being able to roll like we used to and came up with the concept of 12 bar blues referring to the actual nightclubs, not bars of music.”

Recorded mainly at his small studio near his Valencia, Spain home, Rouse created the instrumentally oriented set during the confines of 2020 relying on keyboards and Roland Cloud samples. It’s “a stress-free atmosphere with breezy, improvised electronica,” says Rouse. “I was really just looking for vibes that were soothing. I didn’t want anything that was aggressive.”

From the eerie Eno-like ambient opener of “Buenas Noches Baby” to the Brazilian chords and melodies of the  Jobim-esque “Color De Vida,” the album is an alluring mix of lyric and instrumental tunes that meld together so smoothly that they feel more like a whole piece of music rather than a collection of songs. Realizing the music was far from the guitar-based, storytelling style for which he’s known, Rouse felt it needed its own name and Isla was born.

Rouse was joined on the recording by Tashian, who plays keyboards and Linn drums on “12 Bars”. The album was mixed by longtime producer Brad Jones and mastered by Mike Westbrook. The distinctive album cover was designed by Rouse’s wife, artist/singer Paz Suay, who also provided backing vocals on “12 Bars” and “It’s Not Too Far.”
