Inspirational run, walk, and roll by Triumph Foundation to help and inspire people with disabilities coming up on Saturday, September 21, 2019.

Superheroes Triumph! 5K – September 21, 2019

Van Nuys, Calif. — Triumph Foundation, a nonprofit organization working to improve the lives of people living with disabilities hosts the 3rd annual Superheroes Triumph! 5K on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Lake Balboa/Anthony C. Beilenson Park.

The chip-timed race is for runners and rollers – wheelchair users – and is open to the public for a $50 entry fee. The purpose is to hold an all-inclusive recreation activity for the community where everyone can participate, regardless of their physical ability or mobility limitation.

The added competition elevates the fun, and provides a learning opportunity, showcasing members of the community with disabilities in a positive way that the general public does not often see.

Special features include free superhero capes, best costume contest, and The Challenge.  The Challenge is for people with disabilities that are ambulatory.  Participants are ‘challenged’ to walk as far as they are able, whether that’s five steps, the full 5K, or just standing up at the finish line.  Triumph Foundation’s 5K is no ordinary race – it’s 3.1 miles of inspiration – from the costumes, to the variety of abilities competing in the same race, to the motivational comradery of communities coming together to support each other.

“The Superhero 5K gives me motivation to stay in shape and be healthy. It is a lot of fun and an activity that I can do with my friends and family. There is competition and support, there’s nothing else like it!” said Walter Escamilla, a paraplegic who was injured in 2007 in a motor vehicle accident.

Randi Wyatt, Triumph Foundation’s Event Coordinator, adds, “This type of event helps to unify people because everyone is here for the same reason and to achieve the same goal. We have been so fortunate to see this event continue to grow and reach more people in the running and disabled communities. It is also nice to know that those who can use their legs and run are doing so on behalf of those who cannot. Every dollar raised goes directly to Triumph’s mission – helping people get better every day!”

Triumph is seeking participants, volunteers, sponsors and community partners to help support this event.

Highlights of the new separate-ticket event, Oogie Boogie Bash—A Disney Halloween Party, include:

  • The new “World of Color” show, “Villainous!,” exclusive to Oogie Boogie Bash. In this nighttime spectacular, Oogie Boogie weaves a Halloween tale about a young girl (and all-new character created by Disney animator Eric Goldberg) named Shelley Marie. In “Villainous!,” Shelley has a decision to make about her Halloween costume for this year, and finds herself wondering if she could really be as strong and unique as some of her favorite Disney characters. This twisted tale carries Shelley on an unforgettable journey, exploring the villainous side of Disney characters through fountains, lights, lasers, projections and special effects. “Villainous!” shows guests that, deep down, there’s a little villain in all of us.
  • Redwood Creek Challenge Trail becomes Villains Grove, a wondrous and ethereal world of Disney villains unlike anything seen before. Redwood Creek will be completely transformed with lighting, projections, sounds and special effects, creating a dreamlike environment. This new experience unfolds in a series of scenes, each creating a hauntingly beautiful dream-space of color, sound, light and shadow, as stories emerge from the darkest night to create an enchanting world.
  • New and wonderfully wicked, fully immersive treat trails throughout Disney California Adventure, where guests may enjoy trick-or-treating under the watchful eyes of iconic characters such as Mad Hatter from Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” or even Oogie Boogie himself. Additional treat trails will feature oversized cauldrons full of treats for all guests at Oogie Boogie Bash.
  • The new DescenDANCE, a pulsing party in the Backlot area of Hollywood Land, inspired by the popular “Descendants” franchise from Disney Channel. Here, guests will find so many ways to be wicked. As the DescenDANCE show begins, a spell is cast, summoning the greatest dance crew from the Isle of the Lost to throw down and lead everyone in moves that are set to the biggest hit songs from the “Descendants” movies. Once the DescenDANCE crew returns to their realm, the Backlot DJ continues to spin tunes that will make any “villain kid” proud, inviting everyone to step onto the dance floor into the night.
  • The guest-favorite “Frightfully Fun Parade,” which will come to Disney California Adventure park for the first time. The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow arrives on his ghostly black steed just ahead of the parade itself, carrying his flickering jack-o-lantern. He heralds the arrival of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse who lead the cavalcade of characters, including Jack Skellington and many mischievous Disney villains who are ready to stir up some trouble along the parade route. New this year, the ever-curious and whimsical Cheshire Cat joins the parade, mischievously smiling at all the magical mayhem.
  • The new “Mickey’s Trick and Treat” show, perfect for young guests, at the Disney Theater in Hollywood Land. This new, interactive stage production invites guests of all ages to join Mickey Mouse and his pals as they throw a one-of-a-kind Halloween party that include dancing, not-so-frightening scary-tales, and candy.
  • Character encounters with beloved Disney characters – and villains, too. Guests may be surprised at who they discover at this Halloween party, ready for photos and greetings.
  • New Halloween magic, which appears on the façade of Carthay Circle on Buena Vista Street. Carthay Circle will be enchanted throughout the night as bats swarm, green energy pulses from within and spellbinding moments transform the iconic tower structure.
  • Entry to Disney California Adventure Park before the party is included with an Oogie Boogie Bash ticket. The party begins at 6 p.m. PST and guests have the opportunity to play in Disney California Adventure for three hours before the party starts on Tuesday and Thursday nights (excluding Oct. 29 and Oct. 31) or four hours on Sunday nights, plus Oct. 29 and Oct. 31.

WalletHub News: 2019’s States with the Best & Worst Community-College Systems

WalletHub News: Aug 19, 2019  |  Adam McCann, Financial Writer

University education is out of reach for many Americans, especially those from low-income households. But thanks to community colleges, higher education is more accessible than ever. Compared with public four-year institutions, where tuition and fees cost almost three times as much on average, community colleges offer many savings for students.

Some states make community college even more accessible than usual. Multiple states and numerous cities across the U.S. have started “College Promise” programs that give residents free rides to community college. New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Tennessee are some of the states that have joined so far. Such initiatives are proving to be more critical than ever, with college tuition increases outpacing inflation and the need for post-secondary training in most jobs protected to grow through 2020.

Community colleges will be able to help meet that demand. But despite the fact that community colleges offer significant cost advantages, not every state offers schools of the same quality. Mr. Bungle to reunite for first concert in 20 Years at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, Feb. 6 & Feb. 7, 2019, featuring Scott Ian & Dave Lombardo, playing “The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny” feat.

Band members were 15-17. First show was Nov 30, 1985. They made a demo called “The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny” with the original mid-80s lineup: Mike Patton (vocals), Trevor Dunn (bass), Trey Spruance (guitar, trumpet), Jed Watts (drums).

There were some sax contribution from Theo Lengyel.Band evolved through various forms of ska, punk, funk, jazz etc. The lineup settled by the end of the 80s: Mike Patton, Trey Spruance, Trevor Dunn, Danny Heifetz (drums), Bar McKinnon (sax) and Theo Lengyel. Band put out a self-titled record on Warner Brothers in 1991, reflecting the music of those late 80s years + an expanded feel for where music should go in the “grunge” and “death of true metal” era. John Zorn produced the record. Band toured nationally.Band put out a second record on Warner Brothers in 1995.

Music reflected the members’ growing spirit of musical adventure and was considered “Avant Garde” by people expecting circus ska funk metal. Toured internationally.Band put out a third record on Warner Brothers in 1999. It was considered “pop” by people expecting Avant Garde, and everyone else wasn’t sure but could tell it took a lot of work. Toured internationally.
